Coastal Plain League Alumni Participate Across Major League Spring Training

Officially 56 former Coastal Plain League players are on 40-man rosters or non-roster invitee lists across MLB Spring Training (picture courtesy Major League Baseball.) 

In total, 26 of the 30 Major League teams have at least one CPL alum on their spring training roster, with the Oakland Athletics, Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres leading the way with four former CPL players each.

When the spring training totals are broken down further, the American League is home to 32 CPL alumni, while the National League has 24 former CPL players represented among their spring training rosters. Additionally, 38 of the 56 players invited to spring training have already made their Major League debut, including nine who made their debuts one season ago: Kevin McCarthy (Kansas City / Edenton), Jharel Cotton (Oakland / Peninsula), Joey Wendle (Oakland / Edenton), Chad Pinder (Oakland / Peninsula), Mike Mayers (St. Louis / HP-Thomasville), Ryan Garton (Tampa Bay / Columbia ‘10), Tim Adleman (Cincinnati / Wilson), Chad Girodo (Tonoto / Wilson), Tyler White (Houston / Gastonia.)

The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s premier summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 21st season in 2017, the CPL features 15 teams playing in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL has had nearly 1,300 alumni drafted and 94 of those – including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander – make their Major League debut; while another notable alum – Russell Wilson – won Super Bowl XLVIII.
