DURHAM, NC – The Coastal Plain League (CPL) reached a new milestone when alum Patrick Monteverde took the mound in relief for the Miami Marlins on April 19. For Monteverde (photos courtesy of Ralph Wood and Jim Arend), he celebrated making his debut in Major League Baseball (MLB), but for the CPL, he also marked the league’s 200th Big Leaguer.
“Hitting the 200 mark is an incredible milestone for the Coastal Plain League,” said Chip Allen, Commissioner of the CPL. “It’s a testament to the talent that’s come through our league and the environment we’ve built to help players grow. We’re proud to have played a part in their career path and can’t wait to see who’s next.”
With the Marlins already down 7-1 to Philadelphia with one out in the bottom of the fourth, Monteverde entered the game in relief of another CPL alum, Cal Quantrill (Morehead City, 2014). He quickly retired the side to end the inning. Ultimately, the 6-2, 200-pound southpaw would go 3 2/3 innings, surrendering four earned runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out four.
Drafted in the eighth round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Texas Tech, Monteverde spent most of the 2022 season with High-A Beloit before being promoted to Double-A Pensacola. In 2023, he started with the Blue Wahoos, going 10-5 with a 3.32 ERA, and striking out 114 in 114 complete innings. He then was called up to Triple-A Jacksonville for a pair of starts to close out the year. A year later, Monteverde was back up with the Jumbo Shrimp after a short stint in Jupiter and Pensacola. In 14 games, he struck out 58 in 70 innings and sported a 4-4 record with a 5.66 ERA. He was 1-0 with a 4.82 ERA after 9 1/3 innings of work in relief for Jacksonville in 2025 before receiving the call to join the Marlins in Miami.
Before joining Texas Tech, Monteverde was at Seton Hill and spent the 2017 summer with the Peninsula Pilots. He made 12 appearances on the bump, throwing 17 2/3 innings and finishing with a 5.09 ERA and 1-1 record. He gave up 11 runs — 10 earned — on 17 hits, walked nine and struck out 20.
Overall, the CPL now boasts 200 Major League alumni, including six who have made their debuts in 2025. The Pilots, meanwhile, have had 17 alums reach the Bigs all-time.
