It’s the Savannah Bananas visiting the two-time reigning Petitt Cup Champion Morehead City Marlins for game one of the 2021 CPL Petitt Cup Championship Series on August 5. As the higher seed, the Bananas will host game two and (if necessary) game three in Savannah, Ga August 6-7.
After winning both the first and second half West Division Championships the Bananas entered the playoffs with the highest winning percentage in the league at .818 (36-8.) Given the Bananas led the league in both batting average (.291) and ERA (2.54) during the regular season, it’s little surprise for anyone to see them in the final. They did however have to comeback from down one game in the West Championship Series to take down the formidable HP-Thomasville HiToms in three games, winning games two and three to avoid the upset.
On the other side, the Marlins started off the season a little slow but regained their championship form in the second half winning the Second-Half East Division Title and finishing with a 29-14 record overall. The Marlins carried this momentum into the East Championship Series where they swept the East’s top-seeded Peninsula Pilots in two games. After sitting out the 2020 season due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the Marlins look to win their third straight CPL Petitt Cup, having won in both 2018 and 2019.
The only team in CPL history to win three championships in a row is the HP-Thomasville HiToms who completed this feat from 2006-2008.
