2006 MLB Draft

The Coastal Plain League announced Friday, June 9, 2006 that 72 players, both former and players signed for the 2006 season, were drafted in the 2006 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. A list that featured 12 players selected in the first 10 rounds was highlighted by Tyler Colvin of Clemson. Colvin, who played for the Florence RedWolves in 2004, went in the first round, 13th pick overall by the Chicago Cubs.

The 72 players drafted is the most CPL alumni total drafted since the league started back in 1997. In 2005, 67 CPL alums were selected in the draft, while 66 were taken in the 2004 draft.

All but two, Asheboro and Columbia, of the 15 CPL clubs had at least one alum drafted. The Fayetteville SwampDogs, Florence RedWolves, Peninsula Pilots, Petersburg Generals and Wilmington Sharks each had eight players drafted, which was the most by any team this year. The Wilson Tobs were next with seven players drafted, followed by Martinsville with six. Outer Banks and Thomasville each tallied five draftees, while Edenton and New Bern notched four each. Spartanburg featured three drafted alumni, and Gastonia rounded things out with two alums taken in the draft.
