2001 MLB Draft


Forty coastal Plain League alumni were selected in the 2001 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Former Asheboro Copperheads pitcher and third baseman Dallas McPherson (The Citadel) was the highest draftee, chosen by the Anaheim Angels in the second round, 57th overall. Durham, Edenton and Peninsula each had six alum selected, topping the league, Peninsula’s total, though, is more impressive considering all six draft picks were from one squad, last year’s inaugural team. Several drafted players from this year’s rosters have opted to begin their pro careers, including Durham’s Vince Vukovich and Aaron McEachran, Fayetteville’s Tommy Bayrer, and Wilson’s Scott Hilinski. The University of South Carolina was the best represented school among CPL alum, with four former CPL players drafted. The University of Miami, The Citadel, University of Delaware and N.C. State all had three CPL alum selected. The complete list of CPL players drafted follows:
