2005 MLB Draft

The Coastal Plain League announced Friday that 67 players, both former and players signed for the 2005 season, were drafted in the 2005 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. A list that featured 19 players selected in the first 10 rounds was highlighted by Ryan Zimmerman of Virginia. Zimmerman, who played for the Peninsula Pilots in 2003, went in the first round, fourth pick overall by the Washington Nationals. Also taken in the first round of the draft was Wade Townsend, who played for the Thomasville HiToms in 2002.

The 67 players drafted ties the most CPL alumni total drafted since the league started back in 1997. In 2004, 67 CPL alums were also selected in the draft. All 14 current CPL clubs and one former franchise (Durham) had at least one alum drafted. The Peninsula Pilots led the CPL this year with an impressive 11 players drafted, followed by Fayetteville and Edenton with 10 and nine players respectively. The Wilson Tobs were next with eight players drafted, followed by Wilmington with six and Florence with five. Outer Banks, Petersburg and Spartanburg each tallied four draftees, while Gastonia and Thomasville notched three each. Asheboro featured two drafted alumni, and Durham, as well as new franchises, Martinsville and New Bern, rounded things out each with one alum taken in the draft.
