The Coastal Plain League announced today that Trent Youngblood of the Asheboro ZooKeepers was named Hitter of the Week, while Peninsula Pilots pitcher Jay Cassady earned Pitcher of the Week honors for week five of the CPL regular season (June 27-July 3). Youngblood started all five games for Asheboro on the week, recording at least one hit in all of them but one. The junior utility player from Transylvania finished the week with a .556 average off of 10 hits, including a pair of doubles. He drove in eight RBIs and scored five runs, while also being walked three times and swiping three stolen bags. Youngblood also finished with a .667 slugging percentage, .619 on base percentage and an OPS of 1.286.
Cassady got the start for the Pilots on July 2 against Tri-City and was nearly untouchable. In 6 2/3 innings of work, the 6-5, 215-pound lefty from Christopher Newport surrendered just five hits, walked one and struck out an impressive 12 Chili Peppers. Opposing batters swung just .200 against him. While he had a 0.00 ERA and had helped position Peninsula for the win, the Pilots gave up the lead late in the game. Cassady also finished with a WHIP of 0.90 and a K/9 of 16.200.
