The Coastal Plain League has announced that Calvin Estrada (picture courtesy of Jennifer Jones) of the Macon Bacon has been named the 2019 CPL Hitter of the Year. This was Estrada’s first season with the Bacon and his first in the CPL.
Estrada, 6-1, 230-pound junior from Long Beach State had a histroic season for the Bacon, finishing with a .361 batting average across 41 games and a new single season CPL record for doubles with 25. The outfielder also added six home runs and 61 total hits, helping him drive in 46 RBIs on the year while also notching nine stolen bases and 32 runs scored. He managed 11 walks and struck out 26 times across 183 total plate apprearances to finish with a .410 on-base percentage and .615 slugging. In total, Estrada finished the season first in doubles, second in batting average, third in total hits, fourth in RBIs and sixth in slugging.
His performance earned him a spot as the South All-Star teams designated hitter in the 2019 CPL All-Star Showdown in Savannah, Ga., in July. Estrada went 1-for-2 with a double in the teams 2-1 loss to the East All-Stars. While the full teams will be announced on Wednesday, his efforts also earned him a First-Team All-CPL selection. All player awards are selected after gathering feedback from coaches as well as team and league officials.
Estrada is set to return for his final season at Long Beach State after batting .245 with five doubles and one home run over 39 games played for the Dirtbags in 2019.
