The Coastal Plain League announced today, August 20, that PJ Potter of the Edenton Steamers has been named the 2018 Coastal Plain League Broadcaster of the Year. This was Potter’s first season with the Steamers and the CPL.
“Receiving this award means the world,” said Potter. “Among the 16 teams, there was a huge pool of talent all around the Coastal Plain League this summer, and getting selected out of all of them really is an honor. Coming into this summer, I had never done a broadcast alone. So, my biggest goal was to make each broadcast enjoyable, inviting and informative. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Without the owners and the general manager of the Edenton Steamers, none of this would have been possible. I had a tremendous support system and I’m thankful they trusted me to represent Edenton every night on the mic.”
Potter earned this honor by showcasing outstanding professionalism in all phases of the job throughout the season. This included conducting interviews with players and team personnel and writing nightly game recaps in addition to calling the games each night. A number of items go into selecting a Broadcaster of the Year with the fan vote accounting for 50 percent of that consideration. It was here that Potter really shined, tallying twice as many votes as the next closest broadcaster with fans refrencing his smooth, yet exciting delivery and his excellent knowledge of the game. Something that comes from years of playing baseball himself, giving him a unique perspective from which to call a game. The CPL’s Director of Broadcasting Chris Edwards had similar sentiments when asked to evaluate Potter’s work.
“PJ’s work ethic and dedication to his craft made him standout among a very talented group of broadcasters in the CPL this season,” said CPL Director of Broadcasting Chris Edwards. “PJ has the ability to paint a picture with his words and connects with his audience in an advanced way. I can not wait to follow his career and see what heights he can reach.”
Potter graduated with a degree in Journalism in 2018 from Hofstra University where he played for the school’s baseball team his freshman year before shifting his focus to broadcasting once his playing career ended. He spent last summer as the broadcaster for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in the Cape Cod Baseball League before joining the Steamers for the CPL’s 2018 season. He hopes to move on to Minor League Baseball this upcoming summer and continue to work his way up the ranks from there.
While Potter had a number of great calls this summer it’s hard not to remember his final call at Historic Hicks Field in Edenton, N.C. as he signed off for the season with this walkoff home run call.
