The Coastal Plain League announced today, August 20, that Robert Beare of the Wilson Tobs was named the 2018 CPL Scorekeeper of the Year. This was Beare’s first season with the Tobs and the eighth year the CPL has named a Scorekeeper of the Year.
“It’s truly an honor to receive this award,” said Beare. “To be recognized by my peers for everything I accomplished this summer is a great feeling and makes being a part of the Tobs and the Coastal Plain League that much more special.”
A CPL scorekeeper holds duties such as scoring each game both in hard copy form, as well as updating the live stats in real time for fans following along at home. Each night they also must send game night reports to the league office and send boxscores to local media. In addition to their nightly duties they are responsible for working closely with the league office in reviewing any scoring change requests that are sent in as well as making sure all players stats are correct on the league’s website. Beare was selected based on his ability to complete both each of these tasks promptly and accurately, showing a great aptitude for the stats program and scoring a game overall.
Beare is currently starting his senior year at UNC-Wilmington where he is studying Statistics and Economics. His goal is to one day work as a data analyst in the professional sports field, with his eyes ultimately set on working in Major League Baseball.
