The Coastal Plain League announced today that Ben Whetstone of Edenton was named Hitter of the Week, while Christian Scafidi of Holly Springs earned Pitcher of the Week honors for the ninth week of CPL action (July 22 – July 28.)

Whetstone, a redshirt-sophomore at Missouri State, came up big for the Steamers as they fought to stay in the playoff hunt, hitting .471 across 17 at-bats. In total he finihsed with eight hits, including three doubles, one home run and three RBIs for a .824 slugging percentage. He also posted a .421 on-base percentage overall on his way to stealing one base and scoring two runs.

On the mound Scafidi continued a dominant season for the Salamanders with yet another impressive performance, this time tossing six scoreless innings to get the win against the Wilmington Sharks on July 28. The rising junior out of the University of Pennsylvania, allowed only two hits while striking out 12 batters and walking none for a .100 opponent’s batting average and 0.33 WHIP. Scafidi has built an impressive resume for the Salamanders in 2018, currently holding a 0.66 ERA to go along with 52 strikeouts across 41 innings pitched this summer.
